Spraypaint markings give a hint of what the scene must have looked like in the Safeway parking lot on Wednesday night in Douglas.  That is where FBI agents arrested 37 year old Casey Nethercott, a former member of the border watchdog group, Ranch Rescue.

But the arrest did not go without incident.  An agent shot 22 year old Kalen Riddle, who was with Nethercott at the time.  Riddle is in critical condition at University Medical Center, and is also a former member of Ranch Rescue.

The FBI is not saying why Riddle was shot during the arrest, which happened about 11:15 Wednesday night.  Nor is the FBI saying why it is searching the ranch where Nethercott lived.

Agents were arresting Nethercott on a warrant for threatening to assault three Border Patrol agents who stopped him on August 31st.  The complaint said that Nethercott said, “I’m going to take care of this myself, we’re going to have a shootout.”  Riddle was at that run-in with the Border Patrol, also.

Nethercott is a convicted felon who served time in California.  He was also found guilty of felony firearm possession in Texas; however, an accompanying charge of assault, for pistol-whipping an illegal immigrant, ended in a mistrial.
