TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Border Patrol agents rescued several illegal immigrants in the last week, due to abandonment by smugglers in the desert on the Tohono O'odham Reservation.
On March 23, BORSTAR agents rescued a woman and two boys from the desert. The trio was found near Covered Wells, AZ. According to the release the family had been abandoned by their smuggler three days prior.
Agents were called in after receiving a 9-1-1 call, to search - requiring a coordinated air and ground search. The trio was located and taken to a local hospital for treatment of dehydration.
Early in the evening on March 24, BP agents on patrol near Topawa, AZ heard noises that sounded like cries for help coming from a dry well in the area. According to the BP release the agents were able to locate a man trapped at the bottom and get him out.
The man, a native of Guatemala, did not appear to be injured. He stated he had been forced into the well by two smugglers who were armed with weapons, after he allegedly refused to carry a bundle of narcotics when crossing the border.
All individuals are being held for further processing.
