TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Those with children at the University of Arizona or are a student there themselves, may want to look over their next bill from the school.

Students will now be charged a convenience fee for using a credit or debit card to pay a bill at the U of A, a fee that began earlier this week.  Students are not very happy about the extra fee.  They are now going to be charged a 2.5 percent fee for using either of those cards.

The fee would add almost $260 a year for students paying in state tuition, while adding about $600 a year to students paying out of state tuition.

Officials with the U of A say credit card processing fees are a significant and rising cost for the university.  So they have arranged for a third party vendor to accept credit and debit card payments, but since it is a third party accepting the payment, they charge a fee for the service.

Students are so upset about this fee they began a petition on and have so far received 6,000 signatures.

The University of Arizona announced the convenience fee earlier this year via an email to all students.
