Final 'Movie in the Park' for the summer

Final 'Movie in the Park' for the summer

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The final 'Movie in the Park' is happening this evening.

What began with a projector and a 're-purposed' bed sheet back in 2003, has turned into a popular summer event for the community.

According to Southern Arizona Cultural Alliance (SAACA), this season the program has seen its largest crowd ever at more than 6,000 movie goers. SAACA co-sponsors the event with Cox Communications.

Average attendance to the 'movie in the park' has more than doubled from the 2013 series.  Organizers predict this upward trend is because the movies have all been in one location, previous events had movies at different locations.

Event organizers are also saying they would like to expand the series due to its popularity; they would do this by starting the series a month earlier and ending it a month later. Movie goers will have to wait until next year to see these possible changes, this fall there are many festivals and events vying for the public's attention, said organizers.

A further milestone, and to prove its popularity, the 2014 series has had the most food vendors ever, seven food trucks and they were all local.

The final Movie in the Park will be 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman', this evening at the DeMeester Performing Arts Pavilion (900 S. Randolph Way, Tucson). Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. with the movie showing at dusk. Those wanting to see the movie are encouraged to get to Demeester early and plan on using the alternate parking at Hi Corbett Field.
