COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A Cochise County Sheriff's Department helicopter made a hard landing outside Tombstone just after 11 a.m. on Friday as it surveyed a controlled burn fire in the area, according to officials.
The department said the crew was not hurt, but the chopper lost its tail rotor. Cochise County unveiled the helicopter last May. It can carry six passengers and a pilot.
Crews said Sheriff Mark Dannel's son, Sierra Vista Police officer Justin Dannels, was on board as an observer.
Federal investigators are determining what caused the accident. The department said the helicopter contractor will have a replacement ready on Saturday.
