Gabby Giffords honored with new award from YWCA of Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A first of its kind award has gone to Tucson's one of a kind woman.

YWCA of Tucson granted Gabby Giffords its first Changemaker Award. The former congresswoman offered words of encouragement to the room full of women after her mother, and then her husband Mark Kelly took the stage.

Giffords' mother described what the former congresswoman was like as a young girl and also spoke about her drive in the days and months after the shooting. Husband Mark Kelly spoke about her refusal to give up and their work to reduce gun violence through Americans For Responsible Solutions. She then took the stage to offer her words to the crowd.

"My spirit is as strong as ever. I'm still fighting to make the world a safer place and you can, too. Get involved with your community. Be a leader. Set examples. Be passionate. Be courageous. Be your best. Thank you, very much," Giffords said to the room full of applause.

The YWCA said there was no contest to Giffords for its first Changemaker Award.
