If you've been bagging up clothing with the intention of dropping it off somewhere as a donation, Goodwill and Uber have good news for you: Until 3 p.m. today, Uber drivers are picking up bagged clothing donations for free and delivering them to Goodwill.
Building on the success of previous promotions in the New York, Boston and San Francisco areas, this is the first time Goodwill of Southern Arizona and Uber are working together in Tucson to combine the power of donating with the convenience of ordering a ride via a mobile device.
Here's how it works: Donors bag the clothing they've been meaning to donate. Then they open the Uber app and select the GIVE option on the bottom of the screen. An Uber SUV will arrive to pick up clothing bags, and the driver will drop off the donations to Goodwill, free of charge.
- All clothing must be bagged for drivers to accept donations.
- Drivers will arrive at requested pickup locations.
- Donors are responsible for bringing bags outside, as drivers cannot leave their vehicles unattended.
For people who want to donate to Goodwill during the promotion but have already donated their goods or live in areas where Uber isn't available, Goodwill is accepting monetary donations online at www.goodwillsouthernaz.org.
Goodwill will use the revenue from the donations sold in its retail stores to help support its five youth programs and five adult programs that provide job search services and career paths in Southern Arizona. In 2013-2014, Goodwill provided services to more than 10,000 people, according to the company.
