TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Although National Drug Take Back Day is officially over, the Pima County Sheriff's Department is now giving people the opportunity to dispose of their old or expired drugs anytime. They have a permanent d rop off box inside the Rincon substation.
On Saturday, Sept. 26 people across the nation worked to make their home a safer place by getting rid of drugs they were no longer using. There were several d rop off locations across Pima County.
According to the Pima Health Department, since they began collecting drugs in 2009, more than 10 tons have been collected. And now there is a box that will be located permanently at the Pima County Sheriff's Department Rincon substation. It was made possible thanks to a gr ant by the governor's office and several other local organizations.
Sheriff's department spokesperson Dep. Tom Peine said they chose to put the box at this location because several people have visited this station asking about drug d rop offs. Peine and others hope the addition of this d rop off location will reduce the number of prescription drug accidents.
"Our children may accidentally get into them, the elderly might mistake the wrong medication and end up with a cross reaction. We keep so many of our drugs, just in case and we don't need it," said Karin Merritt with the Pima County Health Department.
Peine added there were also environmental issues if the drugs are not property disposed of.
