NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A Nogales family woke up to quite a surprise on Sept. 8, after a 28-pound bundle of marijuana fell through their carport roof and crushed a dog crate underneath. Luckily, no one was injured.

The residents said they heard a loud noise around midnight, but did not check on the noise until the following morning.

The bundle of drugs most likely came from an ultralight aircraft and crashed through the roof of the home by mistake, according to the Nogales Police Department.

Robert Fierros, detective and spokesperson with NPD, said they've seen drugs smuggled by drones and other unmanned aircraft, but haven't seen a situation like this one.

Fierros said the location in which the bundle dropped is an indicator that this was a drug smuggling attempt gone wrong.

"They typically go and try to unload that contraband in the outskirts of town or further north," Fierro said.

Some residents of this neighborhood said it's concerning that drugs are being transported in their area. Others however, said they're not surprised.

"It just seems inventive. There's tunnels all the time going around doing things. So it seemed like just another avenue for getting drugs over the border," said Gregory Droeger, a Nogales resident.

Droeger said he still considers Nogales one of the safest communities in Arizona.
