TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Drachman Montessori Magnet Elementary School has been named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School.

Drachman Montessori Magnet School is the only school in Tucson and one of four schools in Arizona to receive this award this year.

The Blue Ribbon is awarded to public and private schools across the country who achieve high levels of performance or work to close achievement gaps.

The school was notified of their eligibility in January and applied for the award. The three month application process involved gathering data on enrollment, teacher turnover, and attendance rates, according to the school principal, Dr. Jesús Celaya.

Celaya has been the principal at Drachman Montessori for 10 years. During that time, Celaya said the school has set itself apart from the rest by working on student-teacher relationships.

"Over the last 10 years we've really become, I'd say experts, in terms of learning what the individual child needs child by child on campus. We realize every child is different and their background are different, what they come to school with in terms of their knowledge base, cultural status and who they are as people," Celaya said.

The school, along with 335 other 2015 Blue Ribbon schools, will be recognized next month in Washington D.C.

Some of the previous winners include Mesquite Elementary (2014), Sabino High School (2013), Manzanita (2012), Presidio School (2007), and Ocotillo Early Learning Center (2004).
