TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Tucson City Council is nearing a decision on the new Tucson Police Chief and the announcement may come Monday.  City sources tell Tucson News Now they would like to name the new officials ahead of the next council meeting.

Sources say City Manager, Michael Ortega, as well as reps from the Tucson Police Officer's Association have traveled to California in the last few days to talk to candidate Christopher Magnus.  The current police chief in Richmond has surfaced as the front-runner.

The Tucson Police Officer's Association is endorsing candidate Malik Aziz of the Dallas Police Department, but Aziz says he has not been in direct contact with the City Manager since his interview.

The winning candidate will replace Chief Roberto Villaseñor who is retiring at the end of December.
