Tucson Fire offers space heater safety tips

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Tucson Fire Department released tips Monday for using a space heater safely as temperatures drop.

Capt. Barrett Baker said the portable heaters should be placed at least 3 feet from anything flammable including towels, newspapers, and clothes.

Never use an extension cord.

Baker recommends plugging the space heater directly into the electrical outlet. It is also strongly advised that the heater never be left unattended.

Baker said the agency recently tackled a house fire that was sparked by a space heater.
