OVERTIME: Pusch Ridge captures Division IV state title
ARIZONA (Tucson News Now) - Not bad for a debut performance.
Pusch Ridge Christian, in its first season in Division IV, beat Northwest Christian 14-7 Saturday night for its first state crown.
The fourth-seeded Lions (13-1) made the most of six turnovers by the Crusaders and won in dramatic fashion for the third straight week.
The biggest series came in the final minutes of the game. With the score tied at 7-7, Pusch Ridge punted to give the ball to the Crusaders at their own 6-yard line. The Crusaders gave it right one play later on a fumble, setting up Tamerat Mcleod's winning touchdown run.
The Lions' other score came at the end of a 99-yard drive that was set up when they picked off Drew Inness for the third time. Aaron Trdvy did the honors on defense and then who else but seniors Cody Cropp and Ben Walker finished the drive on offense.
Winning in dramatic fashion is sort of a habit for Pusch Ridge this postseason.
Two weeks ago, the Lions beat defending champion River Valley in the quarterfinals on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cropp to Walker with 20 seconds remaining. Walker than blocked a game-tying field goal attempt by the Dust Devils as time expired.
Last week, Pusch Ridge beat Lake Havasu 17-14 on an field goal in overtime by Tamerat McLeod.
