Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting identified

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Authorities said an overnight standoff ended Monday, Jan. 18 with one man dead at a home on Tucson's west side.
Jordan Szymanski, 33, was fatally shot after firing at law enforcement, according to a news release.
No officers were injured, but several apartments, a citizen's vehicle and a TPD vehicle were struck by bullets.
The incident began just before 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 17 at a duplex on Roger Road, between Oracle and Stone roads.
Authorities showed up at the home after a 911 caller reporting an assault.
Officers arrived on scene and were unable to verify the initial report, but were concerned on the welfare of the caller.
They attempted to speak to the caller inside the residence, but he refused. They were eventually able to identify him as Szymanski.
Around 6 p.m., Szymanski allegedly called 911 again and said he was going to start shooting.
Officers went back to his home to try to speak with him. As they were investigating, they learned of a separate report filed with the Oro Valley Police Department where Szymanski allegedly threatened to shoot someone.
Officers continued to speak with him and began evacuating nearby residences.
Roger Road between Oracle and Stone was also closed.
Officers from the Tucson Police Department SWAT Team, Hostage Negotiation Unit, Bomb Unit, K-9 Unit, Air Unit and the Mental Health Support Team all responded to the incident. Officers from the Pima County Sheriff's Office and members from the Tucson Fire Department also responded.
Officers attempted to contact Szymanski throughout the night. He began shooting from inside his home and refused to come out.
Around 3 a.m., he allegedly emerged from his home and fired several shots.
Officer Brandon Jimenez, a 15-year veteran with the TPD and a member of the SWAT Team shot Szymanski, according to the news release.
He was pronounced dead on scene.
An investigation of the incident is ongoing.
