TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Chicken of the Sea is voluntarily recalling about 107,000 cans of tuna.
According to a release from Tri-Union Seafoods LLC, at least 2,745 cases of 5-ounce cans of Chicken of the Sea brand light tuna in both oil and water are being recalled.
"The health and safety of our consumers is our No. 1 priority. As soon as we discovered the issue, we took immediate steps to initiate this voluntary recall, alerting our retail customers that received the product and instructing them to remove it from store shelves," said Shue Wing Chan, president of Tri-Union Seafoods LLC, in a recent release.
The tuna is being recalled because of an equipment malfunction that may have caused the fish to be undercooked. According to Tri-Union officials, this issue was found during a routine inspection.
This was part of the commercial sterilization process and could result in spoilage and life-threatening illness if consumed. So far there have been no reported illnesses related to this issue.
