TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Pima Animal Care Center is offering free pet adoptions all weekend to celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day on Saturday, April 30.

Both Saturday and Sunday, May 1, all pets over six months old at the main shelter (4000 N. Silverbell Road) and the four off-site PetSmart adoption centers are waiving adoption fees. However, new families are still required to pay the $16 licensing fee for adult dogs. The adoption special includes the pet's spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, micro chip and a free vet visit.

There are close to 500 animals at the shelter available for adoption. Check out who's available here - dogs and cats.

"We have many deserving pets waiting for their forever homes," said Justin Gallick, PACC's director of community engagement in a recent release.

PACC takes in thousands of pets each year that need medical care and new loving homes, in 2015 alone it cared for 18,597 pets and reached a historic high 90 percent save rate.

"Thanks to the community's tremendous support, we have come a long way," Gallick said. "Just five years ago, our save rate was only about 40 percent."
