MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The parents of a 15-day-old baby are lucky the child is alive after their car caught fire Saturday afternoon, May 14, on I-10 between Ina and Cortaro roads.

They were driving their four-door sedan east on the freeway just before 1 p.m. when people in vehicles nearby began alerting them to smoke and flames coming from the car, said Deputy Chief Scott Hamblen, a spokesman for Northwest Fire District.

They pulled over but were having trouble getting the baby out of the car seat, according to Sgt. Chris Warren, a Marana Police Department spokesman.A passerby stopped and helped get the baby out. If not for that person, Warren said, the child would have died because the car was so full of smoke.
