Sam Huff, 18, was killed this weekend in an explosion while driving in a convoy around Baghdad. She was a member of the military police.

Huff graduated from Mt. View High School less than a year ago. Students knew her for her leadership as a drum major in the band.

Friends and teachers say even though she had a commanding demeanor, she was also warm and friendly.

"Even though she was tough, she'd start smiling afterward," said Mt. View junior Courtney Neuman, who knew Huff through the band. "Her smile was contagious."

Neuman said Huff joined the Army to serve her country and follow in her family's footsteps. During her senior year at Mt. View, Huff worked hard to get ready for basic training.

"She was full of life, beautiful," said Mt. View band director Ellen Kirkbride. "Even though she was girly in many ways, she had a passion to go into the military."

Huff is survived by her mother, who works for the Oro Valley police; her father, a retired TPD detective; a half sister and half brother.

The family is still working out the details for the funeral.
