PIMA COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Fourth of July is just around the corner and Pima Animal Care Center is making sure they have room for a potentially busy holiday.

"Our goal is to adopt out as many pets as possible before July 4 to prevent us from becoming overcrowded and reaching shelter capacity," said Justin Gallick, PACC's director of community engagement, in a news release.

From July 1 to 3, PACC is hosting a Clear the Shelter adoption event. According to PACC adoption fees and reservation fees (normally $50) will be waived for all pets. Waived adoption fees include the pet's spay or neuter surgery, age appropriate vaccinations, a microchip and a free vet visit. These adoption specials will be honored at the main shelter (4000 N. Silverbell Road) and all four off-site PetSmart adoption centers.

To help cut down on missing pets, PACC is offering the following tips to keep those pets safe during the holiday:

  • Keep your pets inside during the fireworks.
  • Make sure your pet wears proper up-to-date identification in case he becomes lost.
  • Provide your pet with calming and distracting items, such as classical music, a ThunderShirt, or enrichment toys like a KONG filled with peanut butter.
