TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - There's a new sculpture to admire in the Fourth Avenue District, and it comes with a special message.
The nonprofit "Ben's Bells" teamed up with the Fourth Avenue Merchants Association to install a new sculpture on Fourth Avenue that bears the emblem of a simple and universal message: "Be kind."
The bright-green installation is located in front of the Elements in Balance salon on Fourth Avenue near Fifth Street, so it's not hard to miss.
It follows the "locks of love" tradition, in which sweethearts latch on padlocks with their initials, then throw away the key to symbolize everlasting love.
The "Be kind" sculpture is the ninth "locks of love" sculpture currently up on Fourth Avenue.
"More and more people are recognizing that kindness is not a soft issue to be dealt with after the real problems are solved," said Ben's Bells Founder and Executive Director Jeannette Maré in a news release. "Kindness is the foundation that connects our community so that we can solve problems together," Maré said.
Those who frequent the Fourth Avenue District said they appreciate the sculpture.
"It's a message we need very badly these days and it's a message that is non sectarian; it can be applied to people of all faiths, no faith, people of all generations," Rachel Srubas said.
