TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Beginning Friday, Aug. 19, Pima Animal Care Center is offering $10 adoption fees for all pets, including puppies and kittens, at the Silverbell shelter (4000 North Silverbell) and four PetSmart locations. This adoption special will run through Sept. 11.

"We are so full that we have adoptable dogs in the tent because there is no room for them on our main shelter floor," said Justin Gallick, PACC's director for community engagement, in a recent release.

The $10 adoption fee will apply to all animals, except those in the Long Timers Club and Silver Whiskers Club. As members of either club have their adoption fee waived year-round.

All adopted pets will come spayed or neutered, with up-to-date vaccinations, micro-chipped, and with a free vet visit, too. An additional $17 licensing fee will also apply to all adult dogs.

The sale was launched to motivate the community to adopt (not shop) from the critically overcrowded shelter, which is currently home to 400 dogs and 275 cats.

Spring and summer months in the past have shown PACC faces its highest numbers during these times, with the surrender of unwanted puppy and kitten litters.  According to PACC officials this year that number has not tapered off and they continue to take in more pets than the shelter is equipped for.

While the new tent helps with overcrowding in the main shelter, staff would like to bring in as many of the dogs back inside, especially through the end of the monsoon storms.

"Housing dogs in the tent can become challenging this time of year – particularly with the heat and the storm noise," Gallick said. "Increasing adoptions is the only way we can make more room inside our shelter."
