Former UA professor pleads guilty to stealing from school

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A former University of Arizona professor has pleaded guilty to stealing at least $200,000 from the school.

According to the Associated Press, John A. Marchello pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft on Aug. 11 and will pay $83,000 back to the school.

Marchello, who worked at UA for almost 50 years, was a professor of animal sciences. According to court documents, he stole from the student-run meat store he oversaw from Jan. 1, 2013 to Nov. 30, 2014.The AP said the school filed a civil lawsuit against Marchello to recover an addition $140,000.

The 80-year-old Marchello, who resigned in April, will be sentenced on the theft charge Nov. 21.
