TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A man in his 50s has been displaced from his home after a fire ignited in the carport of his apartment.

The Tucson Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting flames coming from the apartment, located in the 2100 block of North Treat Avenue, on Wednesday morning, according to a news release.

When crews arrived, they could see a heavy black column of smoke.

The carport was engulfed in flames and had spread to a SUV, and was also threatening a neighboring apartment that had a common carport area.

Crews quickly began working to put out the fire. Nine units consisting of 23 firefighters responded.

The man and a female friend who was staying in the apartment were able to get out safely and were not injured.

It was the female friend who first smelled the smoke and notified the man of the fire.

Investigators are now trying to figure out what caused the fire.
