Zika virus call center now in southern AZ
PIMA COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Pima County Health Department and Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center have collaborated to bring a new resource for the public and healthcare providers who have questions about mosquito-borne diseases, such as the Zika Virus. Beginning this week, the community has access to a call center that is available 24 hours a day and can be reached by dialing 1-877-518-4633.
This phone line provides community members with 24/7 contact to a Pima County healthcare provider to ask questions and obtain information about mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika and West Nile virus as well as, assess a person's risk for exposure to such diseases. The phone line also serves as a resource for medical and healthcare professionals to report a suspected occurrence of a mosquito-borne disease.
All information received will be sent to the Pima County Health Department's Epidemiology program for review and follow-up. The phone line is a single point resource for healthcare providers, first responders, laboratories, other public health agencies, and community partners can also use this phone line to report mosquito-borne diseases, Zika exposure evaluations, and other public health emergencies.
The Pima County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement between Pima County and the University of Arizona (UA), through the Arizona Board of Regents, in August to create the 24-hour public phone line to report and ask questions about Zika Virus, travel related risks from the disease, and how to further connect with public health officials if necessary.
The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center, operated by the UA, will staff and maintain this new phone line using $49,900 in funds from the Arizona Department of Health Services Public Health Emergency Preparedness Grant.
