TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A Tucson police officer is expected to survive after he was shot while trying to chase a suspect Monday night.

The incident happened on Tucson's south side near 36th and Park Avenue.

Police say two officers were working gang and drug enforcement in the area when they tried to stop a man on a bike for a traffic violation.

They say the man wouldn't stop and drove away.

Officers began chasing the man when he allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot at the officers, grazing one of them.

The officer fired back, striking the suspect several times.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but as of Tuesday morning, his condition had improved.

Police say the man had cocaine on him.

Park Avenue did not open until around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, almost 12 hours after the shooting happened.

The officer involved in the shooting has been with the Tucson Police Department for 12 years.
