Two officers shot, suspect dead in officer-involved shooting on south side

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Campbell Avenue is back open after an officer-involved shooting Thursday, Dec. 1 that put two Tucson police officers in the hospital and left a suspect dead.

According to a press release from the Tucson Police Department, the incident happened at the Campbell Terrace Apartments, located at 4750 S. Campbell Avenue, around 7 a.m.

Two police officers were attempting to serve a felony arrest warrant to 27-year-old Jose N. Barron Gomez for aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument, when gunfire was exchanged. He died at the scene.

It is unclear who fired first.

TPD Chief Chris Magnus said one officer, identified as Officer Jorge Tequida, underwent surgery for injuries in the shoulder and chest and is in intensive care in serious condition.

The second officer, identified as Officer Doug Wilfert, was shot in the leg.

He was treated at the hospital and has been released.

Both were treated at Banner - University Medical Center.

Detectives from the Violent Crimes are conducting a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Office of Professional Standards is conducting a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel in response to this incident.

This is standard protocol in all officer-involved shootings.

Dugan first tweeted about the incident around 8 a.m., and warned drivers to stay away from the area while police investigated.
