Two juveniles suspected in air-cannon smuggling attempt

NACO, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Agents investigating what appeared to be drugs being launched across the border into Naco, AZ, discovered two juvenile US citizens with a bundle of marijuana, according to the US Customs and Border Protection.

According to a CBP news release, Border Patrol agents detected the apparent launch of drugs from Mexico on Dec. 7.

The two suspects were found with about 34 pounds of marijuana that was molded into a cylindrical shape approximately of a diameter that could fit in a 55-gallon drum, the release said. Agents believe an air cannon in Mexico was used to launch the bundle across the border.

The agents seized the narcotics and turned over the suspects to the Cochise County Attorney for prosecution.

Patrol Agent in Charge of the Brian A. Terry Border Patrol Station, Michael Hyatt, said in the release, "Smuggling organizations often take advantage of teens, lying to them about their chances of being prosecuted for their roles in smuggling attempts. In many cases, they do not realize the true consequences of their actions."

If convicted, the juveniles in this case could face 18 months of incarceration.
