TUSD names interim superintendent

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Tucson Unified School District Governing Board appointed Dr. Gabriel Trujillo as interim superintendent on Tuesday, March 28.

Trujillo has been the district's assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction since August 2016.

"This stage may be bigger, but I'm comfortable with the role," Trujillo said. "I understand about being in the community spotlight and to be held accountable to the community members and to deal with issues such as closing achievement gaps, crowding in schools and staffing schools. So I am comfortable with the responsibilities in front of me."

His new role as interim superintendent will run until June 30, though there is an option to extent that contract.

Previously he has worked as a principal and district administrator for Phoenix Union High School District.

Board members Chrystal Foster and Rachel Sedgwick both said he is well qualified for this job and understands the goals and values of the district.

Board member Adelita Grijalva thanked Trujillo for his willingness to step up and serve.

Trujillo said the district is faced with two major tasks, hiring teachers and finalizing a budget.

"My role is just to be responsible steward of the district and to carry out the functions of the superintendent, so that the board can engage in the search process," Trujillo said. "Really we're focused on two huge priorities right now. I'll be working with the teams, to mobilize the teams to staff our schools for next year. Hiring teachers, it's a priority and of course finalizing and submitting a budget that reflects the fiscal reality, direction of the board."

The board also voted during the meeting to begin the process of searching for a permanent superintendent.

The meeting agenda was changed to begin with the No. 11 item, deciding on an interim superintendent. This appointment is effective immediately, according to a TUSD tweet.
