TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Thursday and Friday are First Alert Action Day as Tucson prepares for the first freeze of the season.

Hardware stores are starting to see an increase in people stopping by to keep themselves, their family and even their pets warm and their home safe.
Mark's Ace Hardware, near Ft. Lowell and Campbell, is stocked with fire logs, tarps to cover plants, and pipe insulation.

Protecting your pipes is one of the most important things to do. That's why Elliot Anderson, a Tucson house flipper, is stocking up on pipe insulation when he heard temperatures are d ropping into the 20s.

"It is super easy, just buy it in bulk from Home Depot or Lowe's or Ace, and get a high-quality thing to wrap it with so it stays on there, but really easy to do," he said.

"Really smart because you will save a lot of money other than redoing some plumbing." Camille Gibson, general manager at Mark's Ace Hardware, said now is the time to buy.

She said people don't want to have to come in after the freeze looking to repair their pipes and homeowners definitely don't want to show up late only to find out all the supplies sold out.

"There are times where every hardware store is wiped out of certain supplies because it happens to so many people," she said.

If homeowners don't have pipe insulation, they can take a towel and wrap it around their outdoor pipes. Or, they can also leave a faucet or two dripping in their home overnight so there's always a constant flow.
