MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Marana Unified School District Governing Board is considering closing Thornydale Elementary School, according to a news release from the district. The closure could happen by June 2019.
MUSD will be holding a public meeting to hear from parents in the district who are for or against the closure. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Thornydale Elementary School at 7651 North Old Father Drive, in the cafeteria.
The decision to possibly close the school, which was built in 1974, is due to a steady decrease in enrollment over the last eight years. A declining state budget and the escalating costs associated with building maintenance and utilities are also factors in the closure.
On Thursday, April 12, the MUSD Governing Board will vote on this matter during their regularly scheduled Public Meeting at 7p.m. at the Marana Municipal Complex, at 11555 West Civic Drive.
According to the news release, if the Governing Board does vote to close Thornydale Elementary, attendance boundaries will be redrawn to include Quail Run Elementary School and Butterfield Elementary School and transportation for Thornydale students will be provided to either of these schools.
Parents may also choose to open enroll to another MUSD school in accordance with policy. It is anticipated that all Thornydale teachers, staff, and administrators will continue to have a position within the District due to attrition at other school sites as well as the opening of the K-8 school in Dove Mountain.
