SIERRA VISTA, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A group of band students from Sierra Vista is heading to Hawaii for Spring Break.
It is a trip of a lifetime for many and they will be performing while they are there.
"We are all coming to this realization that, 'Oh my God, we are going to Hawaii,' and it was such an awesome shared experience for all of us," said Samuel Martinez, a drum major who also plays the flute.
Talks of a trip to Hawaii began as just whispers but once the fundraising began, the Buena High School students said it began to feel real.
"When I found out I was going to Hawaii at first I didn't believe it just because it had been a rumor. As soon as we actually got the confirmation, we were actually doing it, I was so excited," said Cory Hermanson, a drum major and percussionist.
Buena band teacher Dr. Duane Chun will be taking 114 students and 60 adults on the trip.
While they are there, they will perform an Americana concert on the deck of the USS Missouri. The Jazz Group will be performing on the center stage at the Ala Moana Center. Students will also participate in an exchange program with Kalani High School band.
But it will not be all work. Island fun is part of the itinerary.
Chun said he plans these types of trips every two to three years to help build band teamwork.
In the past, he has taken students to Florida, San Diego, and China.
Students paid for their own tickets and will be gone from Sunday, March 11 to Friday, March 16.
