Alliance of American Football to kick off inaugural season in 2019

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - There's a new football league in town ... again.

Former NFL executives Bill Polian and Charlie Ebersol announced Tuesday, March 20, they are establishing The Alliance of American Football.

The AAF, which is set to kick off its first season the week after the 2019 Super Bowl, will feature an eight-team league.

The teams will play a 12-week season that runs during the NFL offseason.

While many football fans took to social media to voice concern, the AAF has made some big promises, including win bonuses, stat bonuses and fan engagement bonuses for the players. The league said it will also offer value pricing on food and drink inside its stadiums.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the AAF is the elimination of kickoffs, which Polian called one of the most "dangerous parts of football."

After touchdowns and at the start of each half, the ball will be placed on the offensive team's 25-yard line.

Also, teams will be forced to go for 2-point conversions after scoring, as there will be no extra points.

The league has received some big-time support from former NFL players like Troy Polamalu and Jared Allen, who will serve as executives in the AAF.

CBS has reportedly reached a deal for broadcasting rights.

The league is now accepting applications for players and corporate employees on its website. Cities are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
