TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - In the midst of change on 4th Avenue, three local women are doing what they can to preserve the locality, taking over Antigone Books.

What started as a love of reading became a love of helping other people find that same joy.

Kate Stern, an employee and future owner of Antigone Books said, "As soon as I was even interviewed, it was just so personal and a community experience I wanted to be part of."

Stern and two of her colleagues, Morgan Miller and Melissa Negelspach, have spent years of their lives dedicated to the store.

They've been driven to committing to the next chapter, by turning the page from employees to owners.

"I hope we can bring up a new generation of book lovers and help them find their favorite books," said Negelspach.

These book lovers will tell you it's their perfect happy ending. All of them have always wanted to own a store of their own, but never knew the right time. When they got word the current owners were selling the store; they had their own novel idea.

"Okay, this is it. This is when we have to do it," said Miller.

It's been a team effort, made possible by the community. Different people have donated thousands to keep the store alive. A crowdfunding webpage on Indiegogo has brought in more than $27,000.

Their goal is $32,000 to reach the funds needed to completely buy the store.

One of their goals for the future is to help keep the streets of Historic 4th Avenue, local.

"We're strong and we're staying. That's so important that we maintain the culture and the character of this place that we live," Stern said.

The store opened their doors in 1973, founded by women. The tradition will continue to stay alive at Antigone, with these three helping their customers.

"I want them to feel their needs reflected here," Miller told Tucson News Now.

A home to those customers, the way the store has been a home for them.
