TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Roughly 1 million kids across Arizona will not be in school on Thursday, April 26, as thousands of educators are marching at the capitol in Phoenix, leaving districts without adequate staff to operate.

The march is meant to bring to state legislators the message that educators need higher wages and schools need better funding.

Here are more options:

Tucson YMCA

  • The Mulcahy and Jacobs YMCA locations will be available all day for kids while other locations are figuring out whether or not to stay open.
  • Pre-registration was required, but this could be an option if the walkout lasts longer than anticipated.

The program will be available from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. for $5 per child per day to be paid at the site. This program will be available for this Thursday and Friday only.

United Methodist Church

  • Some United Methodist churches in southern Arizona are offering their support by providing free childcare. Although not all United Methodist churches have the space or resources for this type of response, you can find out if the United Methodist Church near you is providing childcare by visiting www.find-a-church.org and searching for the church in your community.
  • Is offering Red for Ed day camp. It will be for kids kindergarten to Sixth grade and run all day. They will offer the kids, a splash pad, games, movies and even a science experiment. One of the things parents may love out the camp, it’s free! To register click here.
