UA GRADUATION: What you need to know

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Thousands of people will flood the University of Arizona on Friday, May 11, to celebrate the graduating class of 2018.

While seniors gear up for the big day, police are preparing to make sure the celebration goes without a hitch. More than 40,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony which begins at 7:30 p.m.

Officers with the University of Arizona Police Department and private security will be on high alert, along with other supporting agencies from Tucson.


Gates at Arizona Stadium open at 5:30 p.m. Guests are allowed in through any stadium entrance. Tickets are not needed to attend, so everyone is invited.

The ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m.


Seating in the stadium is on a first-come, first-served basis. Free parking is available in the service lots and parking garages.


Game-day rules are being enforced, which means the clear bag policy is in place. See below for allowed bags:

  • Bags that are clear plastic or vinyl and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc bag or similar)
  • Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, after being searched
  • Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection, including but not limited to oxygen tanks, diabetes kits, allergy pens, etc.

With hot temperatures expected, police also want to remind visitors to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and bring sunglasses. Guest can bring unopened water bottles 32 ounces or smaller.

There are water filling stations in the stadium.
