TEMPE, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Freshman Alyssa Aguilar pitched a three-hit shutout Tuesday night at ASU's Farrington Stadium to lead 5th seed Salpointe Catholic to a 2-0 victory over #3 seed Glendale Cactus in the Conference 4A state championship game.
It's the Lancers' first softball title since 1996 and third in school history.
The softball Lancers are also the third Salpointe Catholic girls' program to win a state championship this school year, joining volleyball and soccer.
Senior Yannira Acuna, a 2018 ASU signee, broke the scoreless game open in the sixth with an RBI triple to left that scored Alyssa Ortiz.
Acuna then came home when the throw to the plate got away for an error.
Kim Daniels and Malaea Rocha both had a pair of hits for the Lancers.
Aguilar struck out three and walked one. One of her strikeouts came with runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 4th inning to kill the Cobras only real scoring threat.
Current Salpointe Catholic AD Phil Gruensfelder was the head coach of that Lancers team that beat Deer Valley for the Class 5A title in 1996.
The Lancers also won the title in 1993 but had lost to Cienega in their most recent trip under current head coach Amy Rocha in 2015.
