HEREFORD, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Two Tucson residents and six Mexican nationals were apprehended after a chase in Cochise County on Tuesday, June 5.

According to a news release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol agents and Cochise County Sheriff's deputies arrested the group after a vehicle pursuit that ended near Hereford when the suspects abandoned an SUV and attempted to flee on foot.

Agents identified the Tucson residents as a 39-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man – and said the six adult Mexican nationals were in the United States illegally.

The Tucson pair face felony criminal prosecutions for alien smuggling. The Mexican nationals were processed for immigration violations.

The pursuit began after agents from the Brian A. Terry Station saw several men entering a GMC Jimmy near the international border and head west on State Route 92. Deputies monitoring radio traffic saw and tried to stop the SUV. However, the GMC's driver sped away.

An agent found the vehicle abandoned in a cul-de-sac, and the eight people were found hiding in the brush. Agents found a 9 mm handgun in the area after finding an empty holster in the vehicle.
