TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - As the FIFA World Cup kicks off Thursday, June 14, Tucson businesses are hoping to cash in on the excitement.

The boost comes at a good time as sales typically drop during the summer months as University of Arizona students head home for summer break and seasonal residents return home.

The downtown'R, a restaurant and bar inside the Hotel Tucson City Center, sees a significant dip in traffic during this time. That is why they are turning to events like the World Cup.

The business plans to host FIFA-themed lunch specials, hoping customers go to watch the games and see what they have to offer.

"Going into summer after the university had their graduation, it's getting hot and it's getting slow. So we are trying to find ways to keep the excitement, keep the momentum throughout the summer and into the fall," General Manager Maria Chun said.

She hopes it's a boost for the downtown'R and other area businesses as well.

"I think the excitement of the World Cup - it only happens every four years and they're always great games to watch, so I think that it will be a great boost for the economy especially downtown, so we're excited to be part of that," she said.

It's not just restaurants looking to take advantage of the World Cup, local sports shops are stocking their racks with merchandise as well.
