ADOT: Tractor-trailer fire closed I-10 EB on-ramp at Houghton Road

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Tucson Fire responded to a semi-truck and trailer that caught fire on eastbound I-10 near Houghton on Thursday at 11:35 a.m.

According to a TFD news release, the driver pulled off the freeway as a precaution after a warning light on the dash started flashing, to ensure that both the truck and trailer were okay. It was at this point the driver noticed the trailer was on fire near the front tires.

Several 911 calls were made about heavy smoke and flames coming from the trailer, which was carrying produce.

Crews arrived to confirm that the trailer and the cab were both on fire. A State Wildland asset in the area responded to help ensure that the fire did not develop into a wildfire.

A lack of water posed a challenge at first, according to the release, with the trucks at the scene carrying only 750 gallons of water. Allowing only three to four minutes of water to douse the flames before running out. A Water Tender, which carries 2,500 gallons of water arrived to help put out the fire.

Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers arrived to help reroute traffic away from the fire on the on ramp.

According to the TFD release, the driver did not require medical attention.

The truck was hauling a load of produce which was considered a total loss. The fire was put out, but several units remained on scene due to how far into the trailer the fire extended.

Heavy equipment was also called to the scene, according to TFD, to help remove the produce from the trailer, while the truck was expected to be towed from the scene.

No injuries were reported by firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and there is no word yet on damages.
