PIMA COUNTY, AZ ( Tucson News Now) - A southern Arizona man has been convicted of beating a 2-year-old, leaving the young boy with severe brain damage.

The Pima County Attorney's Office said a jury found Peter John Schmidtfranz guilty of child abuse earlier this week.

Authorities said Schmidtfranz had been dating the victim's mother for a few weeks before the incident happened in November 2015.

"The (boy's) mother heard a loud noise and came to check," the PCAO said in a news release. "Her son was crying, and Schmidtfranz said her presence was only making things worse."

The woman left the room and when she came back to give the boy a bottle, she found him unresponsive.

Schmidtfranz allegedly told the woman to tell everyone he wasn't in the apartment and then fled the scene.

The child suffered severe head trauma. He survived the incident, but doctors have said he will live with "widespread brain damage."

Schmidtfranz will be sentenced Aug. 6.
