FC Tucson Women fall in first-ever Western final

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - FC Tucson Women fell just short of a WSPL Western Conference championship. The Seattle Sounder women defeated FC Tucson 4-2 in the championship game on Sunday in Seattle to put an end to Tucson's title hopes.

This was FC Tucson's (6-3-1) first appearance in the Western Conference Championship after winning the Pac-South Conference. Tucson beat the Fresno FC Ladies 3-0 on Saturday to advance to the Conference championship but couldn't beat the undefeated Sounders (8-0-1).

Alison Raniere (Sahuaro '15) scored both goals for FCTW. She finished with four goals on the weekend.

The Tucson ladies equalized the game against Seattle twice but two late Sounder's goals pushed them ahead late in the match. Tucson's goals came in a 10-minute span, the 50th and 59th minute, then Seattle went ahead for good finding the back of the net in the 75th and 87th minute of the regional championship.

Sounders goalkeeper Jaelyn Cunningham made two late saves on corner kicks in the 89th minute to deny the comeback attempt by Tucson.

The 2018 season can be seen as a successful one for the FC Tucson Women considering the team improved off of last year's 4-3-3 record and second place division finish.
