TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The city of Tucson is hosting an open house ahead of the start of a major construction project on the city's east side.
The project involves widening Valencia Road, about a mile on either side of Kolb Road. A little less than a mile of Kolb is also included in the project.
The open house will be held Wednesday, July 18, at the Pima Air and Space Museum from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. To learn more, click HERE.
A big focus will be on redesigning the intersection of Valencia and Kolb. The city says the goal is to improve safety and increase traffic flow in the busy area.
The road will be widened to six lanes and will also include bike lanes, sidewalks, drainage structures, lighting, traffic signals and landscaping.
The project also means that stretch of Valencia will get some much-needed TLC. The city said it's one of the areas it gets the most complaints about.
Jesus Lizarraga drives a lot for work and says he buckles up tight when driving through that side of town.
"Oh it's super unexpected cause I mean ... it's super smooth and then all of a sudden it starts getting rocky and it'll throw a lot of people off guard," he said.
The project starts on Monday, July 23, and should take about one year to complete.
One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction and the city says it will maintain access to businesses affected.
Drivers are urged to be patient or find an alternate route to avoid the project area.
The $18 million project is funded through the RTA plan.
