Police identify pedestrian killed in east-Tucson crash

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The victim of a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred Thursday night, July 26 on Tucson's east side has been identified.

Juwan A. Dennis, 16, was pronounced dead near East Speedway Boulevard and North Avenida Ricardo Small. Next of kin were notified.

Just before 9 p.m., officers and members of the Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to the serious injury collision. They located Dennis in the roadway with obvious signs of trauma.

After examining roadway evidence and speaking with witnesses, TPD detectives determined that Dennis was standing in the middle of westbound Speedway when a vehicle narrowly missed colliding with him.

The driver pulled over and began yelling for him to get out of the road. Dennis was then seen crouching down in the roadway as a second vehicle approached.

The driver of that vehicle did not see Dennis until the last minute and was unable to stop in time. The vehicle struck Dennis in the roadway, and the driver immediately pulled over.

Responding officers and detectives interviewed the driver at the scene of the collision.

It is unknown why Dennis was in the roadway. The driver of the vehicle involved displayed no signs of impairment, and speed does not appear to be a factor.

This is an ongoing investigation. No charges or citations have been issued at this time.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call 88-CRIME.
