TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A construction project on Tucson's southeast side created massive delays for drivers Tuesday morning, July 31.
Crews shifted traffic during the overnight hours as work began on East Valencia Road between Wilmot and Kolb roads.
Traffic on Valencia was moved to the lanes on the north side (previously westbound) and drivers on Kolb are now using the lanes toward the east (previously northbound).
Deputies with the Pima County Sheriff's Department directed traffic at the intersection of Kolb and Valencia while utility crews worked to turn on traffic signals.
The shift is due to a year-long construction projected aimed at widening Valencia and making improvements at the intersection.
The city will maintain one lane in each direction for the remainder of the project.
Officials urge residents and people who drive through the area to be patient while driving through the intersection as it is now a 25 mph construction zone.
The project managed by the city and funded through the RTA plan is expected to be complete in a year.

Crews will work on the south side of Valencia and the west side of Kolb before flipping to the other side around the first of the year.
Aside from more lanes, workers will also install new storm drain systems, sewer lines along with sidewalks.
