TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A crash involving a woman closed Speedway in both directions from Palo Verde to Country Club late Monday night, according to the Tucson Police Department.

The woman, identified as 68-year-old Margot Kellum, was transported to Banner University Medical Center, where she later died as a result of her injuries.

According to Sgt. Pete Dugan, spokesman with TPD, Kellum had been walking across Speedway at Richey when she was hit by a car.

Detectives with the TPD Traffic Investigations Unit responded to continue the investigation. According to a TPD news release, they were able to determine that the vehicle involved, a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, was traveling eastbound on Speedway in the curb lane. A short rainstorm had just begun to fall and as the vehicle approached North Richey, it collided with Kellum who had been walking southbound in the crosswalk. The driver did not see her until the last minute and was unable to stop in time. The driver involved remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Based on statements from the driver and witnesses, as well as roadway evidence, it does not appear that speed was a contributing factor in the collision. It is uncertain at this time if impairment was a factor.

This is an ongoing investigation and no charges or citations have been issued. Anyone with additional information is asked to call 88-CRIME.
