TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - As thousands of students return to the University of Arizona campus, businesses at Main Gate Square are excited following a slow summer.

Woops! BakeShop celebrates two years this month. Co-owner Ellie Lippel said watching the students leave at the end of every semester is tough.

She said this summer they had to get creative to make ends meet, focusing on community outreach beyond the university. The bakery started pop-up shops around town and even started delivering.

Lippel said while the consistency is nice, it's not all about a steady cash flow.

"The familiar faces; it's been great. The students come into our shop. We have really close relationships with our customers. They come in and it's like family. I give them hugs, and I'm like hi. It's just a good warm feeling. And then there's all the new students who come in for the first time and they're very excited," Lippel said.

Things are already starting to get busy for the bakery. Lippel said they have been working on special orders for sororities and groups on campus as they kick off the new semester.

"We just kind of kick into gear. You get more staff. You start ordering more. It's just a general feeling of excitement and I love that in the beginning of the year," she said.

VisitTucson said the university is a big tourism driver for the Old Pueblo. Hotels get a big boost during major events like family weekend and homecoming.
