Police release name of man killed in shooting at Mariposa Park

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Tucson Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning near Aviation Drive and Third Avenue..

According to a TPD news release, on Aug. 22, at approximately 5:45 a.m., officers from Operations Division South were dispatched to 301 E. Aviation Drive (Mariposa Park) after a neighbor called 911 to report an unresponsive male lying on the ground. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an adult male, identified as 30-year-old Derrick J. Lee with obvious signs of gunshot trauma and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Detectives with the Tucson Police Gang Unit responded to continue the investigation. According to a TPD news release, Lee was known to have gang affiliations, and although gang detectives are investigating this incident, it is unknown if the homicide itself is gang related.

At this time, it is uncertain what led up to the shooting. There are currently no suspects in custody; however, detectives are following up on leads in the case.
