PHOENIX (Tucson News Now) - Gov. Doug Ducey has selected Republican Jon Kyl to replace the late Senator John McCain.

Ducey made the announcement at a news conference Tuesday morning in Phoenix.

From 1995 to 2013, he served with John McCain as a United States Senator from Arizona and as Senate Minority Whip, the second-highest position in the Republican Senate leadership.

According to Gov. Ducey, he has not received assurance from Kyl that he will hold the position through 2020. While Kyl will serve through the end of the year, he could be in a position to nominate another replacement to take the seat once again.

McCain passed away Saturday August 25, after a battle with aggressive brain cancer and was laid to rest on Sunday.
