BP agents stop human smuggling attempt near Benson on Labor Day

BENSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A Sierra Vista woman is now facing human smuggling charges after six people were discovered in her vehicle.

The incident began on Monday afternoon, Sept. 3 when a 25-year-old Sierra Vista woman was pulled by Willcox Station Border Patrol Agents at an immigration checkpoint on State Route 90, south of Benson.

BP Agents found four people from Mexico inside the Volkswagen Jetta, with two more hidden in the trunk.

According to the release the Sierra Vista woman is facing human smuggling charges, while the others in the car - two women and four men between the ages of 17 and 37 are being processed for immigration violations.

BP officials continue to warn that Arizona's high temperatures can kill humans riding in the trunk of a car. Other dangers include carbon monoxide poisoning and the risk of serious injury or death from a vehicle collision.
