Arizona beats Santa Clara in Tucson Regional opener

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The University of Arizona beat Santa Clara 13-5 in five innings in the opening game of the Tucson Regional in the NCAA softball tournament on Friday, May 16.

Arizona’s Miranda Stoddard (13-0) pitched four innings and gave up three hits and one run to get the win.

Sydney Stewart led the Wildcats at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Her lone hit was a grand slam to end the game in the fifth.

Also for Arizona, Kaiah Altmeyer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Regan Shockey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

On Saturday, the Wildcats will play either Grand Canyon University or Ole Miss at 1 p.m. Ole Miss and GCU were set to play in Tucson later Friday. An updated schedule for the regional is available HERE.

If Arizona wins again on Saturday, it would move on to Sunday and need only one more victory to advance to the Super Regional round. If the Wildcats lose Saturday, they will have to play an elimination game at 6 p.m.

The winner of the Tucson Regional faces the winner of the Fayetteville Regional. The teams in the Fayetteville Regional are No. 4 Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Indiana, and Saint Louis.
